Balkania Fanzine presents Azis Totale, a series of speculative simulations of total celebrity. Azis (Née: Васил Трaянов Боянов) Bulgaria’s— and arguably the Balkan’s— biggest pop-star says he “will not stop until he is side by side with Madonna… Gaga: beware and be ready to leave the stage so I can spread my dress on it! You stand in my way! (from the interview Strange Fame in Balkania Fanzine, No. 1). We investigate the visual outcome of a media landscape dominated exclusively by Azis. Through our selection of publications we simultaneously bestow upon Azis global legitimacy and pervert the so-called high culture these magazines arbitrate. From Scandanavian luxury to American financial authority all bow to Azis as monolithic demigod of image and power.
After a year of post-house arrest nationalistic nostalgia, reigning Serbian popstar Ceca has re-emerged onto our radar with her latest release Da raskinem sa njom. We still long for that mid-90s Nevaljala era, but even without cat-eye contacts and claws Ceca is serving LIONNESS in this other-woman takedown clip.
Turbo-Folk beauty is hyperbolic to say the least, and Jelena Karleusa— part body builder, part enduring pop siren— exemplifies everything we love about it. Her latest release So is a new, softer twist on Jelena’s turbo-warrior image and it’s part of a pan-Balkan trend towards a more delicate beauty. Bulgarian singer Andrea has dropped her drag-queen bombshell act in favor of a girl-next-door look in Only You. Cvetelina Yaneva’s has repeatedly cast herself as fragile, western, female archetypes in a mainstream, pop-folk context: harem girl (Vlez), story tale princess (Broi Me), atomic girlfriend (Candy). Is it time for Pop-folk diva’s to take off their chainmail and pick up a parasol?
Balkan baby-lady extraordinaire Maria dropped her bouncy new single and video Pazi Sartseto Si yesterday. Light, sugary and decidedly Pop, it’s a perfect entry point a trend that we’ve noticed cropping up all over the place in the second half of 2012. Let’s call it post-Chalga.
We never payed much attention to old-guard Chalga star Gloria. As admiring outsiders we saw her as basically a skinny Ivana singing extremely mainstream pop-folk for an insular Bulgarian-national audience. What is her brand? Next to sexbomb Andrea, artistic fashionista Galena, pop-princess Cvetelina, child-like hit-machine Maria, mega-mutressa underdog Teodora, turkish glamourpuss Esil Duran, and relatable fan-favorite Preslava… who is Gloria?
The King of Pop-Folk released his latest video today featuring 3 new looks and Olympics inspired underwater swim footage. Kazhi Chestno is a loose culmination of the faux-feud between Azis and Bulgarian starlette Andrea since the release of their collaboration Probvai Se. Although it’s all a bit unclear what exactly they were fighting over, rather than replace Andrea, Azis has opted to emulate her flowing strawberry locks. After years of Payner girls gleaning residual fame from Azis, Kaji Chestno comes as a subtly-parodic reversal.
In spite of alleged tanning-bed induced hypertension during filming (which Azis denies) this new video is a return to form— with or without his signature silver goatee. Fashion credits include Givenchy, Batman, Bacchus, Andrea Teodora, bespoke airplane masks, Janet Jackson and a more than a little Pete Burns.
